Here are sources of news and journalism I (MJ) recommend to replace the mainstream news not rising to meet the moment. I promise you, these indie, local, non-profit journalist can fully replace the NYT, WP, LAT, The Atlantic, etc. and you won't miss a thing.

These media aren't indie or non-profit, but it's decent enough. Good options if you want to ease into things and keep some "mainstream" news in your feed.

• NPR and PBS: Public media is important and needs our support now more than ever.
• The Guardian: The private company that owns this newsletter organization cannot pay dividend, and operates under a trust that secures financial and editorial independence. Reader funded.
• Vox: good explainer style content, produces solid podcasts and videos that breakdown current terms and ideas in the media.
